Allan M. Hoffman, Ed.D., CHES, is a nationally recognized expert on issues associated with violence and violence prevention.
Dr. Hoffman served as the founder and first director of the Center for the Prevention of Community Violence, Des Moines University. The Center for the Prevention of Community Violence served as a research and programmatic organization seeking to understand and prevent violence in community-based organizations and settings.Special emphasis of the Center focused on Child and Domestic violence Prevention, School based violence and Bullying, Gender Violence and other communty based issues and settings.
Among his professional posts, Dr. Hoffman served as the interim president of the Institute for Clinical Social Work, a graduate school of Social Work, located in Chicago preparing clinicians at the masters and doctoral level to work with vulnerable populations, founding president for a proposed College of Medicine, the president of the Santa Barbara Graduate Institute- a niche school of Psychology and the Health Sciences, Dean of Health Sciences in the California State University System among others.
Hoffman has been professor, visiting professor and scholar at several institutions including the California State University, University of Southern California, Des Moines University, Ottawa University among others .
Dr. Hoffman has conducted research and published extensively on violence and violence prevention topics and authored several books relating to understand and preventing violence, including: Elder Abuse, (American Public Health Association) , Domestic Violence: A Global View (Greenwood Publishers), Teen Violence: A Global View (Greenwood Publishers, ) Schools, Violence and Society (Praeger Publishers, ), Violence on Campus (Aspen Publishers), Teen Violence: A Global View (Greenwood, ),
He has served on the editorial board or as a manuscript reviewer for the Journal of Allied Health, Journal of Public Health, and Police Practice and Research: An International Journal. He has provided consulting services to agencies in the USA, Eastern Europe, Tanzania, Puerto Rico and to schools, colleges/universities, and business organizations in multinational settings. He earned an A.S. for the Greater Hartford Community College now known as Capital Community College, B.S. magna cum laude from the University of Hartford, and received two M.A. degrees and a doctorate from Teachers College, Columbia University where he was named a Kellogg Fellow. He is a Certified Health Education Specialist.
Dr. Hoffman is the recipient of numerous awards and honors associated with leadership, teaching and his efforts to prevent community violence , social justice and resolve conflict creatively. He received a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition from the Congress of the United States of America and a Special Recognition Award from the Executive Office of the President of the United States, (Clinton Administration)Office of National Drug Control Policy.
